What a fence actually costs in the Charleston area
Published 28 August 2026
What drives the price of a fence in the SC lowcountry — material, height, gates, tear-out and ground conditions — and why a per-foot number on its own tells you very little.
Material sets the floor
Of the fences we build most often, chain link is the cheapest per foot and aluminium ornamental the dearest, with wood and vinyl between them. That ordering holds almost everywhere, but the gaps between them move with lumber and metal prices, which is why a quote is dated and why an old one is not much use.
Height costs more than people expect
Going from six feet to eight is not a third more material. Taller panels need deeper posts and more concrete, and above a certain height wind load starts to matter on an exposed lot. A four-foot fence is correspondingly cheaper than the height difference alone suggests.
Gates are priced individually, and should be
A walk gate and a double drive gate are different pieces of work. Gates carry hardware, they move, and they take the wear that a fixed run never does. Two or three gates can be a noticeable share of a small job.
Tear-out is real work
Removing an existing fence is charged by the foot removed, and it is not trivial — old posts set in concrete have to come out, and the debris has to go somewhere. If there is an old fence on the line, say so when you ask for a quote; it changes the number.
What the site visit is actually for
We draw the fence line on satellite imagery of your property, which gives an itemised quote with real footage rather than a guess. What it cannot show is what the ground is doing: how deep the sand goes, where the water sits after a storm, whether a truck can reach the back boundary, what utilities are buried on the line. Those move a price, and they are why an online quote is an estimate until somebody has stood on the property.
The short version
- Measure the whole boundary before deciding how much to build. Doing it in one visit is cheaper than two.
- Ask what the fence is for. Privacy, containment and appearance have different cheapest answers.
- Check your HOA rules before choosing a design.
- Get the quote itemised, so you can see what removing a gate or dropping two feet of height would actually save.
